What counts as a good number memory score?
The average adult recalls 7 digits on a number memory test. Scores of 5 to 9 cover most people, 10 to 12 is well above average, and 13 or more is exceptional. The test measures verbal working memory span, which is a component of general intelligence but is not itself an IQ score.
What the Number Memory measures

What affects your number memory score
- Strategy
- Chunking is the biggest lever. Reading "8 3 9 1 4 2" as "839, 142" turns six items into two.
- Rehearsal
- Saying digits under your breath keeps the phonological loop active. Silent reading scores worse.
- Input speed
- Long strings decay while you type. Fast, accurate typing is worth a digit or two on its own.
- Fatigue
- Working memory is unusually sensitive to sleep debt. A poor night can cost a full digit.
How to improve your score
- Chunk in threes. Phone numbers are grouped that way for this exact reason.
- Rehearse out loud or sub-vocally while the number is on screen, not after it vanishes.
- Attach meaning. 1969 is a year, 747 is a plane. Meaningful chunks cost less to store.
- Type immediately. Every second of hesitation loses the tail of the string.
