What counts as a good verbal memory test score?

A typical player survives about 50 words on a verbal memory test. Under 30 is below average, 40 to 60 is average, 70 to 100 is strong, and beyond 120 is exceptional. The test measures recognition memory for words, which is a different and far higher-capacity system than the recall memory used in a digit span test.

How the test works

  1. A single word appears. Choose SEEN if it has already appeared this run, or NEW if it has not.
  2. Correct answers add a point and continue. New words join the seen pool.
  3. A wrong answer costs one of three lives.
  4. The seen pool keeps growing, so discrimination gets steadily harder. Your score is the number of correct judgements before you lose all three lives.

What affects your verbal memory test score

Pool size
Difficulty rises with every word you keep. At 100 seen words the judgement is much harder than at 10, which is why scores taper rather than run forever.
False memory
Words that merely feel familiar cause most losses. Semantically similar words are the usual trap.
Strategy
Players who group words by first letter or by category outperform players relying on raw familiarity.
Language
Native speakers score higher, because word familiarity is itself a language-exposure effect.

How to improve your score

  • Group by first letter. Tracking "words starting with S" is easier than tracking every word.
  • Attach an image to unusual words. Distinctive encoding survives interference better.
  • Default to NEW when genuinely unsure. Familiarity bias makes people over-report having seen a word.
  • Keep an even pace. Rushing raises false positives more than it raises your score.
