Why cognitive testing is worth your five minutes
The abilities these games measure are not trivia. Working memory span predicts reading comprehension and reasoning performance. Processing speed declines measurably with fatigue and age, and is one of the earliest things affected by poor sleep. Inhibitory control, the thing the Stroop test targets, underpins the everyday ability to stay on task when something more interesting is competing for your attention.
What a five-minute game gives you is a baseline. Most people have never seen a number attached to their own working memory or reaction speed, and the number itself matters far less than what moves it. Play the same game rested and then tired, on a laptop and then on a phone, before coffee and after, and the differences are usually larger than the gap between two random people.
Does brain training actually work?
Partly, and much less than the category usually claims. The reliable finding is practice effects: play any of these games ten times and your score will climb, because you learn the task. You work out that chunking digits in threes beats rehearsing six separate numbers, or that the Chimp Test is about memorising a path rather than eight positions.
The contested part is transfer: whether getting better at a working-memory game makes you better at anything else. Reviews of commercial brain-training programmes have generally found strong gains on the trained task, weaker gains on very similar tasks, and little to no improvement on unrelated abilities or on everyday functioning. That is why nothing on this site is sold as cognitive enhancement.
How scoring and percentiles work
Your percentile answers one question: what share of other players did you beat? Once a game has at least 50 recorded scores, that is calculated against the real distribution of scores played here, using a mid-rank method so that ties on whole-number scores are split fairly rather than all landing on the same percentile.
Below that threshold, percentiles come from published population norms instead. This matters more than it sounds: without it, the first handful of players on a new game would all be told they were in the 100th percentile, which is useless information.
