What counts as a good visual memory score?

A typical player reaches level 9 on a visual memory test. Levels 5 to 8 are below average, 9 to 11 is average to good, 12 to 15 is strong, and beyond 16 is exceptional. The test measures visuospatial working memory, a different system from the verbal memory used for digits.

What the Visual Memory measures

  • Visuospatial working memory: where things were, held without language.
  • Pattern encoding, meaning whether you see six scattered squares as one shape instead of six facts.
  • Resistance to interference, since each new level overwrites the last.

How the test works

  1. A set of squares flashes on the grid for about a second, slightly longer as the pattern grows.
  2. The pattern disappears and the board unlocks.
  3. Tap every square you remember. Correct picks light up.
  4. A wrong pick costs one of three lives. Clearing the level adds a square, and the grid itself grows every few levels.

Level Score What it means
Exceptional Level 16+ Well into the top few percent.
Strong Level 12 to 15 Clearly above the typical player.
Average Level 9 to 11 The most common range.
Below average Level 5 to 8 Very often a small-screen or rushing effect rather than ability.
Low Level 1 to 4 Usually means the pattern was never properly encoded before it vanished.

What affects your visual memory score

Encoding style
People who see the pattern as a shape, a line, an L, a cluster, dramatically outperform people who memorise individual cells.
Screen size
Larger grids on a small phone screen are genuinely harder to encode. Desktop scores run higher.
Grid growth
The board expands as you progress, so later levels get harder faster than the square count alone suggests.
Interference
The previous level's pattern competes with the current one. Deliberately clearing your mind between levels helps.

How to improve your score

  • Look for shape, not position. Connect the lit squares into a single figure.
  • Split the grid into quadrants and remember a count plus rough position per quadrant.
  • Fix your gaze centrally rather than darting between squares. Peripheral vision captures the whole pattern at once.
  • Answer in the order you encoded, not left to right. Retrieval works best along the path you laid down.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good visual memory score?

Level 9 is around average. Level 12 to 15 is strong and anything past 16 is exceptional. Most players finish between 8 and 12.

What does the visual memory test measure?

Visuospatial working memory, meaning the ability to hold the locations of several objects in mind briefly. It draws on a separate system from verbal working memory, which is why people are often much better at one than the other.

Is visual memory the same as photographic memory?

No. True eidetic imagery is vanishingly rare and mostly documented in children. High scores here come from efficient chunking of patterns into shapes, not from mentally photographing the screen.

Why do I get worse as the grid grows?

Because the task changes. More squares means more items, but a bigger grid also means each position carries more information. Difficulty rises faster than the square count.

Can visual memory be trained?

You will improve at this specific task quickly, largely by learning to encode shapes. Broad transfer to unrelated memory tasks is not well supported by evidence.
